Hand draw a map of Chestnut Grove Middle School following the directions provided on the "Checklist" handed out in class and on Google Classroom. Be sure to include all requirements on your checklist, checking them off as you complete them.
Unit 1 Vocabulary
Location - Where is the place? How far away is it? What is it near?
Place - What is the location like? Describing the location when you get there.
Human Environment Interaction - How do people use the land? Where/how do people live in the environment?
Movement - How do people travel to and from the place? Why do people move to and from the place?
Region - An area that is unified by something… (climate, culture, political boundaries)
Source - where you get your information from
Primary Source - A source from the place and time being studied – “A Witness”
Secondary Source - A source that is distanced from the place and time being studied – “A Rumor”
Political Map - Shows political boundaries and cities, usually capitals
Physical Map - Shows natural geography such as mountains, rivers, lakes, elevations and shades
Topographic Map - Shows important physical features of terrain like bodies of water, and elevation changes with
contour lines
Legend - Symbols on maps to mark important geographic features such as roads, swamps, cities, airports, and boundaries
Compass Rose - Provided on maps to show direction, such as North or South
Equator - Imaginary line that separates the northern and southern hemispheres
Prime Meridian - Imaginary line that separates the eastern and western hemispheres
Tropic of Cancer - northern tropic
Tropic of Capricorn – southern tropic
Latitude - lines run east to west like rungs on a ladder…“ladder-tude”
Longitude - lines run north to south to the poles
Continent - one of the main landmasses of the Globe
Coordinate - defines a location on a map, using longitude and latitude
